We finished the Time article about immigration and the border. We focused on the article’s attempt to reconceptualize the immigration issue: instead of seeing immigration as a problem to be solved, see it as an opportunity to be embraced. Indeed, as the article notes, this conceptualization of immigration–as an opportunity–was much more common in the 1980s than today.

The article also addresses issues related to immigration, like the problem of addiction in the US. Instead of seeing addiction as a problem of illegal drugs flowing across the border, think of addiction as a mental-health issue, exacerbated by the flawed American health-care system.

We talked about addiction. Juan explained his fascinating book project on addiction in Denmark and Colombia, with the collaboration of a Danish photojournalist, involving artistic representations of drug production, drug use, and drug addiction in the two countries.
