Tuesday, April 16 - AM Fluency
We continued our unit on gender equality. We began with a discussion: What is the status of women’s rights in your native country? How are women treated legally and culturally in your country?
We then listened to two songs that can be connected to feminist issues: “Can’t Hold Us Down,” by Christina Aguilera, featuring Lil’ Kim; and “Bitch,” by Meredith Brooks. We analyzed the lyrics and learned some new slang.
I then gave a presentation. We looked at various stats relating to rape, sexual harrasment, gender wage-gap, leadership opportunities, etc. I also described two key moments in women’s history: the advent of the birth control pill and Rosie the Riveter.
Throughout the presentation, we had numerous and wide-ranging conversations. I think we all learned a lot.
(I also decided that students will, once and for all, learn to pronounce the following words: “bitch,” “beach,” “woman,” and “women.”)
