Thursday, September 5 - AM Fluency
Return papers. Talk about the following:
Need for variety in writing - not just words, but topics. Each of the three paragraphs should be about a different characteristic. Insufficient to say nice, kind, helpful, etc.
Specific words help writer to “say, don’t tell” about their topic and makes interesting writing. “Draw a picture with words.”
Discuss introduction.
Ditto p. 48 - Identify Supporting Paragraph Components:
Hook
Transition
Thesis statement
Hook - a question, an interesting observation, a unique set of events , a famous quote or a surprising or shocking statistic. If researched, writer must give credit to source. We decided asking a question would be easier.
Ditto: Identify Introductory Paragraph Components: Hook, transition to thesis and thesis statement. Highlight the 3 parts, paying particular attention to the transition.
Pair students. Write Introduction for “Elbow” body paragraphs from previous lesson.
Write responses on board. Discuss.
Students do the same for the “Ice Cream” body paragraphs from previous lesson.
Discuss appropriate hooks for previous body paragraphs about a “Favorite Person”.
Brainstorm opinions about Publix.
Students are to write essay (except for conclusion paragraph) about their opinion of Publix. Find three related comments from our brainstorming, and create a thesis statement which gives your opinion of Publix. Then write the Introduction with the three body paragraphs.
