Thursday, January 25 - AM Advanced

Students are asked to give a “fact” about how to write a paragraph.

  1. Proofreading Symbol sheet is given to students; brief discussion.

  2. Students are to “correct” paragraph written on board; it has its errors underlined; students are to use the proper proofreading mark on it.

  3. Return papers students wrote last Thursday.  Point out the fact that proofreading marks were used.

  4. Distribute picture of 8 people at a train station awaiting a train.  The people are numbered 1-8.  Students are to write down a verb to show what each person is doing.  Afterwards, students share their responses on the board.  Then students write a paragraph:  The top bun of the “hamburger” is its topic sentence; describing the actions of the people is the “meat”, and the conclusion is its button bun. “Conference” with partner regarding the paragraphs.

  5. Writing Power 1 - pp. 130-131 - Choosing the topic sentence.  Discussion to follow.

  6. Writing Power 1 p. 132.  Students provide the topic sentence.  Pairs are to work through this together.  Then students from 3 different pairs write the topic sentence they came up with.  (One per chalkboard)  Through discussion, the class picks out ones that are appropriate and “fix” those whose topic sentence was inappropriate.

  7. Students again are asked to give a fact about paragraphs.
