Wednesday, September 18 - AM Advanced
Our study of the history of the English language has brought our attention to the Christianization of England over the course of the early medieval period. This prompted the opening discussion for today’s class: Are you a religious or spiritual person? Explain. Most students in the class were religious. We noted how that might reflect demographic realities: people living in the southern hemisphere tend to be more religious than people who live in the southern hemisphere. Most of the students in the class are from the southern hemisphere of the world.
We reviewed for Friday’s exam. I provided the class with details about the exam. Then we all practiced giving and receiving advice.
We then finished reading chapter 3 of our text. We learned about how lots of English words come to us from Old Norse, the language of the Vikings.
We listened to Enya’s “Caribbean Blue.” This led us to a discussion about the imagination’s ability to create ideals (which reality can never live up to).
Students then completed the chapter 3 exercise on p. 78 of our text. We will review that exercise tomorrow.
