Opening conversation: Name one thing you have changed your mind about in your life. Explain. When I came up with this opening-conversation topic, I did not expect to have such an emotional discussion. Students shared stories about changing their minds about careers, religious beliefs, and their own identities. One student shared how they changed their mind about gay people: they used to dislike gay people, but now some of their closest friends are gay.

We then read an essay I wrote, entitled “Reflections on Being American.” The essay explores my identity as an American and touches on many aspects of life in the US: education, race, culture, the standing of the US in the world, US-led wars, American topography, American cities and small towns, and financial opportunities. Our conversations were open and honest, and often provocative and challenging.
