One conversation we had at the end of yesterday’s class centered on gun deaths in the US versus weapon-related deaths in the UK and in Germany. I did some research and presented the following statistics to students:
US firearm deaths: 42,000/year
Per-capita rate: 12.5 deaths per 100,000 people
UK weapon-related deaths: 2,500/year
Per-capita rate: 3.6 per 100,000 people
Germany weapon-related deaths: 2,000/year
Per-capita rate: 2.4 per 100,000 people
We then began a new unit on a cultural phenomenon known as “Brat Summer.” We kicked it off by listening to a song on the album that started the movement: “Brat,” by Charlie XCX. We then began reading an article defining “Brat” and explaining Brat Summer.
