We began a unit today on Elvis Presley. We started with a general discussion on the man, sharing what we already know, or what we could find online. Somewhere along the line, Dianne said she wouldn’t be surprised if I had spent some time in prison. This became the running joke of class today: that I had spent time in prison (which I haven’t). To make me feel better, someone noted that Martin Luther King, Jr., spent time in jail. Then, later watching the trailer to Blue Hawaii, we discovered that Elvis’ character in that film spent time in jail.
Anyway, we then began reading the article on Elvis. Someone mentioned that Elvis had “mommy issues,” so we got sidetracked with a discussion of Freud. (We decided that, at some point, we definitely need to do a unit on Freud.) We also watched his first performance on the Ed Sullivan Show and his last ever public performance, singing “Unchained Melody.”
We will finish the Elvis article tomorrow.
