We began reading the article on quirky US cities. We got through numbers 7-10: New York, Seattle, Kansas City, and Baltimore. For each city, we focused on vocabulary and taking notes on main ideas. We stopped there and moved on to the next unit. However, the plan is to intersperse this article with work on the next unit: the Beatles. We began with group work: each group discussed what they already know about the Beatles; then they found three interesting facts about the band. (I was surprised that most students knew very little about the Beatles.) We then watched a short video on the Beatles twice. The first time, students did not take notes; instead, they just got a sense of what the video is about. The second time, students took notes. Afterwards, students compared their notes with each other. I transcribed my notes on the board so that students could compare their notes to mine.
Students did a good job understanding the video. We collectively answered all questions correctly on a ten-question quiz on the Beatles. Tomorrow, we will listen to two Beatles songs, then return to the article on quirky US cities.
