Opening-conversation question: If you could speak any language in addition to the one(s) you already speak, what would it be? Lots of students chose Italian.
We then practiced our learning objective: asking for and giving advice. Every student in the class asked another student in the class for advice on a subject of their choice. We had a lot of fun giving advice, oftentimes on subjects about which we knew nothing.
We then answered questions on chapter one of our book (the questions on p. 77). After that, we began reading chapter two and learned that nearly every language spoken in the Western hemisphere, from Hindi to Italian to Spanish to Portuguese to Russian to English and to Icelandic, evolved from a language called Proto-Indo-European.
Then we listened to a song, a song that was included in our unit on immigration: Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song.” We talked about Vikings, “overlords,” and Iceland, the land of fire and ice.
