Thursday, September 12 - AM Fluency

Today was debate day. (Each term, I hold one debate in my fluency class.) Four teams competed in debates on the following subjects:

  1. Argue pro or con: It is better to stay in your native country than to move to another country.

  2. Argue pro or con: Uniforms should be mandatory in k-12 schools.

In the first debate, I ruled the outcome to be a draw. Both sides gave excellent reasons to support their side. Toward the end, emotions ran a bit high. After all, students were debating a topic that involved a major life decision that they all have had to make. But as always, we always remain good friends, even after we vigorously debate a topic, especially when students like Ricardo make jokes to lighten the mood.

In the second debate, I felt that the pro side won by a nose. Katharina did pretty much all the work for the winning side. Congrats to her! But the other side–which turned out to be Team Colombia–performed well also. Vivian is a passionate debater. Rosio is like a machine of logic. And Tania is an excellent communicator; her English is outstanding.

We had a lot of laughs, and gained a lot of insights, as we participated in these spirited debates!
