Monday, March 11 - AM Fluency

The theme of today’s class was “viva Las Vegas!” Opening conversation: Have you ever gambled? Poker, baccarat, blackjack, sports betting, roulette, slot machines? If so, did you win? LudI was the only one in class who had ever hit a jackpot. She won $750 on a slot-machine jackpot in Las Vegas and used her winnings to take a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon.

Before reading an article on Las Vegas, I explained a Botticelli painting from our last class, a painting that we didn’t have time to discuss. It is called “The Calumny of Apelles,” a rich allegorical work.

From there, we moved on to the article on Las Vegas, which explains the history of the city. I supplemented the article with my own personal experiences as a native Las Vegan. After reading about the “Rat Pack” and their performances in Las Vegas, we listened to Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” and discussed the lyrics.
