Monday, January 22 - AM Advanced
We continued exploring the life, work, and writings of MLK. Topics of lectures: MLK in Montgomery, Alabama; MLK in Birmingham, Alabama. Topics for group discussion: causes you believe, defend, and/or stand up for; confronting hate. We began reading and discussing King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” slowly dissecting it for vocabulary acquisition and reading comprehension.
Nearing the end of our King unit, we discussed topics for future meetings. The class voted, and here are the results: American geography, with perhaps special focus on the origins of Las Vegas, the history of California, the history of Hawaii, and the season of Mardi Gras in New Orleans; music, with perhaps special focus on Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Queen, and the Beatles, and perhaps the history of the guitar; cross-cultural studies; food/cuisine; and history.
We then continued our analysis of King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.” We analyzed the letter with great detail, focusing on comprehension through vocabulary and historical context.
