Opening discussion for today: Reflect upon the following quote from Stephen Hawking: Science tells us that humanity “is just a chemical scum on a moderate-sized planet, orbiting around a very average star in the outer suburb of one among a hundred billion galaxies.” Nearly every student agreed with this quotation. Some thought it was important to heed because it keeps us humble.
We then finished reading chapter 7 of our book. Then we completed the exercises on p.79, the exercises that covered chapters 6 and 7.
We listened to two Halloween songs: “Somebody’s Watching Me,” by Rockwell, and “Thriller,” by Michael Jackson. We analyzed the lyrics and discussed the classic television show The Twilight Zone and the classic film Psycho.
We then played a game: “Grill the Teacher (and Some Students).” Students proposed conversation topics. They picked a few from the list. Then they asked me questions about topics. Their goal was to infer my opinion about these topics (one of our learning objectives). Then a few students volunteered to be grilled.
