Opening conversation: Students took a moral litmus test. The basis of the test was the following question: When you are finished shopping at a grocery store, what do you do with your shopping cart? Students who returned the shopping cart to the shopping-cart station were deemed to be moral people. Students who left in the shopping cart in the parking lot were deemed to be a bit morally challenged. I am pleased to report that most students in the class are good moral people 🙂.

We then began reading a new article: an article about the rise of political violence in the United States. After reading some of the paragraphs, we practiced one of our learning objectives: identifying the rhetorical strategy of the writer. (This article so far makes use of a lot of chronology and description.) We also listened to a song that complements this topic: “Wake Up,” by Rage against the Machine.

Toward the end of class, we had our first student presentation. Vinayak gave an outstanding presentation on preparing food on a budget. Vinayak is a trained, accomplished chef, so we all listened very carefully. We also practiced one of our learning objectives by taking notes on Vinayak’s presentation.
