Before reading a chapter about living in the USA, I asked students the following discussion question: What do you like best about the USA way of life? What do you dislike (or like least)?

We then read chapter 10, pausing after every paragraph for questions and discussions. After reading the chapter, we listened to two songs that are at the heart of Americana: “Little Pink Houses” by John Mellencamp and “Centerfield” by John Fogerty.
