Thursday, August 15 - AM Fluency
For our opening conversation, we talked about our summers. One student went on a cruise to the Bahamas. Another student went to Disneyworld and spent time in all four parks.
The rest of class was a follow-up discussion from last class, inspired by analyzing the lyrics of Chappell Roan’s song, “Femininomenon.” The conversation centered on feminism: what is it? How might it improve a society? How might it challenge a society? What are the sources of gender inequality? We shared many theories and ideas, all framed by the perspectives of students from countries with diverse attitudes toward gender equality. (This diversity is what makes class discussions at ACE so great.) We spent a good amount of time at the end of class discussing the birth control pill: its social implications, its influence on women’s rights, and questions about its safety for women today.
