Friday, October 4 - AM Advanced

Our opening conversation centered on a thought experiment: If you were Romeo or Juliet, what would you do? Choose a lover over your family, or your family over your lover? Every single student in the class said that they would choose their lover over their family.

We then began reading chapter 6 of our book. This chapter focuses on the development of modern English. The chapter mentions Issac Newton, so we took a brief detour to discuss his significance. In small groups, students were asked to interpret the following lines of poetry, written about Newton:

“Nature and Nature’s laws lay hid in night;

God said, Let Newton be! and all was light.”

With just a little bit of help, students were able to correctly interpret these lines.

Continuing with our Shakespeare theme from last class and from today’s opening discussion, we listened to two Shakespeare-related songs: “Cruel to Be Kind” by Nick Lowe and “Save Tonight” by Eagle-Eye Cherry.
