How to Maintain

Your F1 Status

F1 students are required to remain in compliance with their status while in the United States.

To maintain status, F1 students must attend class, make “normal progress”, and obey ACE rules and US laws.

  • The complete ACE attendance policy can be seen here: https://www.instituteace.org/attendance-policies-for-f1-students

  • F1 visa students are required to “make normal progress” in order to maintain their visa status. Institute ACE defines appropriate progress as

-Meeting the exit requirements for English Basics in the planned three terms

-Meeting the exit requirements for Intermediate English in the planned four terms

-Meeting the exit requirements for Advanced English in the planned six terms

-Meeting the exit requirements for English Fluency in the planned six terms

Students who do not make normal progress at Institute ACE are required to meet with ACE staff to develop a plan of action to meet the exit requirements within an additional term. Extra-programmatic support may be required during the additional term and will be charged separately. Students who do not meet the exit requirements within the additional term may be terminated for failure to maintain status.

  • A student who doesn’t obey ACE rules may be terminated from the program.

If you move, tell your DSO. SEVIS must always have your current, correct physical address.

Breaking a US law can have different consequences, and none of them are good for the student! The student may be arrested and/or deported. If the student is convicted of a crime, the DSO is required to enter a disciplinary action in the student’s SEVIS record.

Generally, F1 students are not allowed to work. There are two opportunities for F1 students at Institute ACE to work legally.

-Work study. This means to work on campus- to work for ACE. We are a very small school and work study opportunities are limited.

-Request for Work Authorization. If a student’s economic situation changes dramatically, the student can apply for authorization to work due to economic hardship. Students can not work legally until the request is approved by SEVIS.
