Course Goal

This course will allow students to learn and apply CEFR B2/B2+ level listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and strategies. Students will be competent in grammar and vocabulary appropriate to the CEFR B2/B2+ level. Students will move from B2 to B2+ level.

Student Learning Outcomes

    1. When listening to an automated telephone system, you will be able to determine the correct number to press for specific needs.

    2. When listening to a conversation about a familiar topic, you will be able to make a deduction about information heard and who is speaking.

    3. When listening to a conversation, you will be able to choose the best line to continue the conversation.

    4. When listening to a presentation or conversation with new ideas, you will be able to recognize facts and opinions.

    1. When shown a picture, you will be able to speak using the present perfect continuous.

    2. When shown a picture or given a situation you will be able to speak using the past perfect.

    3. When looking at a picture or having a conversation, you will be able to ask and talk about the duration of activities using perfect present tense with for and since.

    4. When given a scenario, you will be able to express your hopes and wishes.

    5. You will be able to give a 4 minute planned presentation, presenting a balanced view of a topic, giving both advantages and disadvantages.

    1. When reading a B2 or higher level text on concrete or abstract topics, you will be able to identify the main ideas.

    2. When reading a B2 or higher level text on concrete or abstract topics, you will be able to take notes to identify important information.

    3. When reading a B2 or higher level expository or narrative text, you will be able to scan to find specific pieces of information.

    4. When reading a B2 or higher level narrative text, you will be able to correctly identify and/or describe setting, characters, character feelings, and important events.

    1. When given a picture or a current situation, you will be able to write a sentence using the present perfect continuous.

    2. When given a writing prompt, you will be able to write a paragraph with sentence variety, using prepositional phrases and coordinating and subordinating conjunctions.

    3. When given a short text on a familiar topic, you will be able to write a summary with proper structure.

    4. When given a writing prompt, you will be able to write a business email using the correct format and language.

Course Objectives

Students will develop their ability to express themselves coherently regarding a familiar topic and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options. They will develop their ability to understand the main points as well as details of a conversation when more complex language is used and on a fairly wide range of topics. They will continue to build their vocabulary on these same topics. Students will learn and apply reading skills and strategies to improve comprehension of B2/B2+ texts about a variety of topics. Students will increase their writing fluency by writing journals and blog posts about topics they are interested in. Students will continue using the writing process. They will develop knowledge and skills for writing a summary. They will be introduced to social and professional writing.
